This website is pretty simple. I don’t collect much data because I don’t really need to.
There are two things on here that can collect data: Google Analytics and FormSubmit.
The main way this website collects data is with Google Analytics. This is a website analytics service that uses a combination of cookies and javascript to snoop on you as you browse the website.
It records which pages you look at and how long you spend on them. It also looks at your IP address and the data your browser is sending to see what kind of device you are using, which city you are from and so on.
Google Analytics also uses a technology called “cookies” to see whether or not you’re a returning visitor. A cookie is just a little bit of text that the website gives to your browser, so that if you come back the server can remember you from before. You can delete your cookies if you want to.
None of this information can be used to personally identify you in any way. All of this data is saved on Google servers.
I honestly don’t know all that much more about how it works because it’s a bit out of my wicket. But you’re welcome to check what Google has to say about it, which is an awful lot.
The main thing I use this for is to see whether my marketing is working to bring people to my website, whether the content is right for people’s screen sizes and so on.
If you don’t want Google Analytics to collect your data, you can install one of the browser add-ons available for Firefox, Chrome, Edge and Safari that will block it.
I also use a third-party service called FormSubmit in my contact form. If you send. our message then goes to the FormSubmit servers, who then send it to me as an email.
The only data it collects is the message and email address you type into the form. Because these messages go via someone else’s server, you probably shouldn’t use it to send any highly sensitive military intelligence, but that would be a very odd thing to want to send me anyway.
And that’s really all the data I collect here.
